Bulgaria is famous for producing rose oil and rose water from the legendary Bulgarian Rose (Latin name Rosa Damascena) grown in the Rose Valley. Located south of the Balkan Mountains, this region offers the perfect climate and conditions for growing roses.

Rose petals are still to this day carefully collected by hand to produce one of Bulgaria’s most precious exports. From late May to early June Bulgaria celebrates the rose picking season with the annual rose festival. The rose festival takes place in the surrounding towns and villages and includes ancient rituals and a colourful festival parade.  

Rose water is often produced as a by-product of the distillation of rose essential oil. Although this doesn’t make the rose water unnatural in any way, it is not its purest form. To truly benefit from the rose’s natural qualities, the rose water should be produced by a special distillation process directly from freshly picked organic rose petals.

Rose water has numerous benefits for both the skin and hair and is a key ingredient in many of our formulations for this reason. Rose water’s remarkable skincare, haircare and mood uplifting properties have been treasured since ancient times as the symbol of love, beauty and health.

A little tip from LMB: Mix our Organic Rose Water with a few drops of our Pure Unrefined Rosehip Oil on a cotton pad to remove make-up and cleanse the face each night and again in the morning to cleanse and prime the skin as a base for your make-up.

Grown at approximately 500m above sea level, alongside the famous Bulgarian Roses in the Rose Valley of Bulgaria, the unique climate and conditions help to produce the best Lavender in the world. 

Lavender needs lots of sunlight to thrive, but can also withstand temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees celsius. From one decare of land, 300-400kg of Lavender flowers are harvested, from which 3-10kg of Lavender oil is produced. Almost 1kg of Lavender is needed to make just 10ml of pure essential oil. A delicate process ensures that every part of this incredible plant's goodness remains in the essential oil form.

There are so many amazing benefits of pure Lavender Oil. Calendula (Latin name Calendula officinalis), also known as the pot Marigold, is a beautiful and common garden plant that has the most incredible medicinal benefits.  In recent years, we have seen celebrities endorsing some amazing stretch mark prevention creams and balms that are made with Calendula extract, making more and more people aware of the benefits of this special plant. However, this very useful knowledge is nothing new to the women of Bulgaria.

For many generations, Calendula has been used in Bulgaria to treat the skin and hair in both topical and tea form. Calendula, like many of our plants, blooms freely in the wild in Bulgaria due to the nutrient rich soil and the year round sunshine.

You will find Calendula extract used in many skin and hair care formulations, in particular, stretch mark and varicose vein balms, as it is well-known to be very effective for such skin conditions. This is why we chose fresh, locally grown Calendula extract as a key ingredient in our 100% natural Botanical Wonder Balms.  

We also believe that plant based healing is most effective when you combine internal and external remedies, therefore drinking fresh Calendula tea also has its unique benefits. Calendula tea is great for digestion, has anti-inflammatory properties and can help to ease the pain of muscle soreness and menstrual cramps.  Calendula is an all round Bulgarian favourite medicinal plant, not to mention its bright and cheerful colour makes it a stunning addition to any garden.

Although infamous for its ability to sting, the nettle (Latin name Urtica dioica), native to Europe, Asia, northern Africa, and western North America, is known for its long use in history as food, fibre and medicine. Usage dating back to the Bronze Age, nettle’s tough stems were used for making fabric, rope and fishing line where the leaves were cooked and eaten. Furthermore, throughout history nettle has been documented to treat ailments such as coughs, tuberculosis, and arthritis.

Nettle’s antimicrobial, anti-ulcer, con-stringent and pain-relieving capabilities make it a key ingredient in many treatments. Nettle’s benefits can be reaped in many ways, as a Nettle tea, cooked in soups or stews, in capsules and tablets or topically. 

Nettle has many benefits for hair loss, which is why Bulgarian Nettle it is a key ingredient in LMB’s Hair Loss range.  It contains 16 free amino acids and proteins plus vitamins and minerals that are essential for healthy hair growth. Nettle has a direct effect of preventing excessive sebum production and cleanses blocked hair follicles. It inhibits the conversion of testosterone into DiHydroTestosterone (DHT), which is the major cause of hair loss. Nettle in combination with Burdock may also prevent premature greying of the hair. 

Male pattern baldness is one of the most common types of balding among men, affecting 30% of men by the age of 30. One of the main culprits of this type of hair loss is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), an androgen sex steroid and hormone. DHT causes hair follicles to shrink and eventually stop growth. Nettle has be proven to be one of the most potent inhibitor of the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. By applying nettle extract with a combination of other ingredients topically, as in our Hair Loss Range, DHT’s effects can be blocked and therefore reduce and reverse male pattern baldness.

Sumac cotinus coggygria (Latin name Rhus cotinus L.), also commonly known as smoke tree, is a medicinal plant belonging to the Sumac family. Growing wild in Bulgaria, Sumac is highly regarded and widely used having been a staple in folk medicine here for many centuries due to its powerful efficacy. 

The Sumac extract taken from the smoke tree leaves is often used to heal many skin conditions due to its powerful antiseptic and anti-imflammatory properties.  

Sumac is also one of the key ingredients used in treatments for hair loss. Sumac has a strong vasodilation effect, increasing blood supply through the vessels that nourish the hair follicle. This effectively induces a new hair growth cycle, prolonging its active growth phase (anagen) and increasing the growth rate of the hair and the width of the hair shaft.

Burdock Root (Latin name Articum lappa) has many known health benefits and has been used in Bulgarian medicinal remedies for centuries. 

With our own roots in Bulgaria, our aim is to use carefully selected local plants that have a long history of proven health benefits. This is why locally sourced Burdock Root has been chosen as a key ingredient in our Anti Hair Loss products.
